Keep or Purge :: Cardboard Soap Box

One of the problems that messies, clutterers, chronically disorganized people, and hoarders have in common is a difficulty figuring out what to do with specific items. This is a weekly post in which I display an item I’ve honestly had trouble discarding or don’t know what to do with.

For more info on these posts see the explanation here.

This first item may seem ridiculous to some of you, but believe it or not, I hesitated several times over whether to throw away this empty box. In the future I’ll be exploring the specific reasons for my difficulty throwing away an item like this. If you feel like it, leave a comment explaining your opinions about this item or items like it.

Item #1: Aubrey Organics Cardboard Soap Box

  1. I’m not sure why you want to keep the box. The flowers are pretty. If it were me wanting to keep the box, it’d probably be because I wanted to cut out the flowers and paste them into a journal or something. So if it’s something like that, then do it and then toss the rest.

Sometimes taking a picture of something, like you’ve already done in this post, helps with getting rid of something.

  2. Hey Leslie,

Thanks for playing along! You’re right about a couple of things here. It’s probably because of the flowers – I have some tendency to want to cut out little images and put them in collages or scrapbooks. My problem is that I end up with these scraps I never use, or worse, I don’t even get around to cutting the images out and just end up with a stupid box lying around!

And yes, it really can help just to take a picture of an item instead of saving it. That’s what we did with some of the things we found (like my old Holly Hobby doll) while helping mom with her great purge. We’ve been trying to encourage her to do that more on her own too.

There is another strange reason I’d want to keep a box like that – and that’s for all the information printed on it. I’ll explore this in more detail in a future post. For now I’ll just say that I’m thankful for the Internet because any info I might want from this box (eg. ingredients) is online on the Aubrey Organics website.

I ended up throwing the box away without clipping anything.
